이번주에  중국 유학생 이양이 함께하여 술문화나 직장 문화, 물질과 정신적 관념에 대한 한국인과 중국인들의 생각과 삶에 대해 살펴볼 수 있는 기회를 갖게 되어 유익한 시간이었습니다. 혹시라도 영어로 세미나를 한다고 해서 관심은 있으나 부담을 가져 망설이는 분이 있다면 그런 고민은 훌훌 털어버리시고 가벼운 마음으로 오세요~~ 세네카의 일상에 대한 글을 통해 우리들의 일상을 영어로 이야기하는 시간입니다^^. 부족함을 느끼시는 분들이나 자신감이 넘치시는 분들 모두 서로서로 도우며 영어라는 언어를 통해 자신을 표현하는 시간이니 많은 관심 갖아주세요^^.

  우선 다음주 공지는 Letter 97~108 중 하나를 골라 읽고 요약한 후 관련 질문 하나를 만들어오는 것입니다. 이번주 목요일에 참여를 못하신 분은 Letter 104~108중 하나를 요약하면 됩니다(다른 분들이 요약할 부분을 정했기 때문에).

  이번주 가장 인상 깊었던 부분은 Letter 83이었습니다.

  Zeno's condemnation of drunkness를 뒷받침하는 Syllogism(삼단논법)을 세네카가 비판하는 부분입니다.

  "'Nobody trusts secret information to a drunkard, he entrusts it to a good man, so the good man will not be a drunkard.' Now pay attention to how the contrary

is mocked in a similar syllogism (for it is enough to quote one out of many) ...  "He says 'drunkard' is used in two ways: the first when someone is acutally drunk

and incapable from wine; the second if he often gets drunk and is vulnerable to flaw; that Zeno means the man who often gets drunk, not the one actually drunk,

 since nobody would trust secrets which could be uttered in one's cups to this man" (151).

  세네카는 여기서 Zeno의 논리에 반박을 합니다.

  "This is false, because the first syllogism includes the man who is drunk, not the one who will be. You will grant that there is a big difference between the drunken

 man and the drunkard, since the man who is drunk may be so for the first and not have this flaw, whereas even the drunkard is often free of being intoxicated.

So I understand what is usually meant by this word especially when it is used by a man who claims to be careful and scrutize his language. Further, if Zeno understood

this meaning and didn't want us tounderstand it, he was seeking an opportunity for deception through the ambiguity of the word, something that must be avoided in

the search for truth. But suppose he realized this; what follows is false, that secret information is not trusted to a man who is often drunk. Think how many times

a general and a tribune and a centurion have given orders that had to be kept secret to soliders who were not alwyas sober" (151).

  세네카와 Zeno는 'drunkness'에 대해 부정적 견해를 공유하지만, 세네카는 술을 마시는 행위가 사람의 성격이나 인성에 악영향을 미치기에 술마시는 사람은 나쁜 사람이다라는 식으로 비판하는 Zeno의 논리를 부정합니다. 세네카는 'drunkness' 자체가 나쁜 것이고, 이것과 사람의 인성과는 무관한 것이라고 주장합니다.

  세미나원들이 요약. 발표 후 토론 질문들은:

  Q: Can a good thing be achieved by evil? 

       Is wealth a good thing?

  Q: Do you read books voluntarily or read them by force? Can you actually feel the freedom of reading the text and read the actual meaning

       between the lines   if you choose the latter?

  Q: What do you think of  'drunkness'? Do you buy Zeno's syllogism of 'drunkness'? Does drinking actually affect our personalities?

      Talk about the bright side and the downside of   drinking.

  이런 내용을 바탕으로 우리들의 일상의 소소한 사건들을 공유합니다. 책의 내용이 다소 금욕주의적이고 철학적이더라도 실상 세미나에서 다뤄지는 내용은 우리들의 일상에

관한 내용입니다. 때문에 <세네카 영어로 읽기> 세미나에 참여하기를 망설이고 계신 분들은 주저하지 마시고 돌아오는 주 목요일(1월 31일) 2시 반에 참여해주시기 바랍니다.
